About the Cold Spring Area

Cold Spring, or Cold Spring-on-Hudson, is a village located in the Town of Philipstown in Putnam County, New York. The population was 1,983 at the 2000 census.

The Village of Cold Spring-on-Hudson was incorporated in 1846. It borders the smaller village of Nelsonville. The central area of the village is on the National Register of Historic Places as the Cold Spring Historic District due to its many well-preserved 19th-century buildings, constructed to accommodate workers at the nearby West Point Foundry (itself a Registered Historic Place today).

Commuter service to New York City is available via the Cold Spring train station, served by Metro-North Railroad.

One of the notable features of the village is its unique perch in the Hudson Highlands. The village borders the Hudson River to the west, and is bound by the Hudson Highlands State Park to the north, where Mount Taurus and Breakneck Ridge rise steeply and dramatically out of the banks of the Hudson and form two basically parallel ridges that track each other inland. The valley between them has an abandoned dairy farm, two lakes, and a camp. The view from the river bank is the Constitution Marsh and the US Military Academy (West Point) slightly to the south, and Crow's nest and Storm King Mountain to the center and slightly to the north. All of this considered, the village is nestled in the most prominent vertical terrain on the Hudson north of New York City prior to the Shawangunk and Catskill ranges. This, and its historic housing stock, have made it a popular weekend destination for tourists from New York City.

Nelsonville is a Hudson Highlands village located in the Town of Philipstown in Putnam County, New York. The population was 565 at the time of the 2000 census.

The Village of Nelsonville is directly east of the Village of Cold Spring. The border on Main Street is roughly demarcated by the eastern property line of the Baptist Church at the height of land.

Along with its neighbor, Cold Spring, the village is known for being a small, picturesque village with a historic housing stock within the New York City metropolitan area. It is a popular weekend and fall foliage destination for New York City residents. The village is served by the Cold Spring Metro North commuter railroad stop.

The town of Philipstown was first settled around 1715.

Established in 1788 as one of the three original towns in what is now Putnam County, the Town of Philipstown's main population centers are the Village of Cold Spring, Garrison, and the Village of Nelsonville. In 1806, part of the town was used to form the Town of Fishkill. Putnam Valley was part of Philipstown until 1839, and a small portion of the town north of Putnam Valley was transferred to Kent in 1877.

Garrison is a hamlet in Putnam County, New York. It is part of the town of Philipstown and is located on the east side of the Hudson River, right across from the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Garrison Metro-North Railroad station serves the town.

Saint Basil's Academy in the town served as the finish line of The Amazing Race 10 in 2006. The film Hello Dolly starring Barbra Streisand was shot in Garrison during scenes placed in Yonkers.

Garrison is home to many non-profit and cultural organizations. Manitoga is the site of Dragon Rock, designer Russel Wright's modern home, which was awarded National Historic Landmark status in 2006. The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, founded in 1987, had its first performances at Manitoga, and is now located at Boscobel, a Federal-style mansion (built 1804-1808) for the Morris States Dyckman family. The Hastings Center, founded in 1969,is an internationally-recognized bioethics thinktank & research center. Constitution Marsh is an Audubon sanctuary with walking trails and canoe tours on the Hudson River. The Hudson Highlands Land Trust promotes and assists in local conservation efforts. The Garrison Institute is a progressive interfaith organization and retreat center. The Garrison Art Center promotes local and regional artists.

Former Governor George Pataki lives in Garrison.

Putnam Valley is a town in Putnam County, New York, United States. The population was 10,686 at the 2000 census.

The Town of Putnam Valley is in the southwest part of Putnam County. The town calls itself the "Town of lakes."

Putnam Valley is the birthplace of actor Tom Welling, best known for his role as Clark Kent on the TV series Smallville. Donald Trump had bought land in Putnam Valley and adjoining towns in the past, however the land was donated to the state in 2006 and its two sections renamed Donald J. Trump State Park.

The Sopranos episode Soprano Home Movies in season 6 was shot on Lake Oscawana.
